April 2017 Newsletter

May 20, 2017

The April 2017 newsletter has been sent out to members.

It includes various news stories, including a topic about the new Jacobite Trail. This new venture chronicles key sites connected with the Prince and the Jacobites, and has been set up by Scotland's main tourism agency, including Visit Scotland. It hopes this initiative will increase the number of international visitors, especially given it's prominent role in the television series, the "Outlander". The trail covers 25 locations, and a copy of the trail can be downloaded from www.jacobitetrail.co.uk.

The newsletter also includes a very interesting historical item, "The aftermath of Prestonpans", which covers the advance of the Prince and the Jacobite army from Edinburgh, via Carlisle, Manchester to London. However, when they reached Derby, they halted, with an advance-guard heading six or seven miles beyond the town to Swarkstone Bridge. At this point a decision was made to retreat to Scotland, as information had been received that there were three English armies at Wetherby, Lichfield, and Finchley Common, protecting London, which greatly exceeded their own numbers.

More information can be found in the newsletter article, which was taken from the book, "The Clan Donald of Garmoran - A History of the MacDonalds of Clanranald",  by Norman H.MacDonald. Copies are available from the author.
